Understanding Continence

Incontinence, characterised by involuntary leakage from the bladder and/or bowel, varies in severity from minor leakages to a complete loss of control. It’s a prevalent concern, with about 1 in 4 Australians experiencing incontinence. Particularly impactful on individuals’ quality of life and social engagement, conditions like urinary and faecal incontinence can significantly disrupt daily life.

Recognising Continence Concerns

  • Are you concerned about going out?
  • Do you sometimes have leakage of urine?
  • Do you have problems with constipation or bowel leakage?
  • Do you wake up two or more times overnight needing to use the toilet?
  • Do you sometimes not make it to the toilet in time?
  • Do you use a product that sometimes leaks?
  • Do you have a catheter?

If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then you are advised to have a continence assessment.
